Virtual Pong

STEVO'S DEVOS

Remembering Pong

As a student at Ozark Bible College a “few” years ago I also worked as a J.C. Penny’s ten speed bike mechanic at the big mall there in Joplin. As you well know, “nowadays” most malls have a video arcade. This mall was no different except for the fact that for us it was a pinball arcade because video games were still future tense. Then, one day this new and amazing, awesome game showed up. It was called Pong! If you’ve never seen this now antique game, it involved two players running their paddle up and down the left or right side of the television monitor and knocking a little rectangular ping pong ball back and forth. Bobby, my bike mechanic buddy and I used to rush down there on breaks and at supper hour to plug our quarters into the machine and play the great game of Pong. Now Pong is almost completely forgotten as a dinosaur among video games. Times change, technology advances, the games we play today will probably be forgotten in even fewer years than it took Pong to go extinct.
Steven Curtis Chapman has a song on his “Heaven In The Real World” album called “Dancing With The Dinosaur”. Here is a sampling of the lyrics:
“Once upon a time not so long ago in a land not so far away. Right and wrong were not quite so hard to know. Times have changed and now it seems. Conscience has gone the way of the dinosaur. But I believe it's still alive and well today, in the hearts of those who will stand up and say. I'm dancing with the dinosaur, living my life with conscience and conviction.”
If your living your life by the standards and values of our Father God, you are considered by the world as obsolete as a game of Pong or a dinosaur in the museum. Don’t let it happen to you. Dance with the dinosaur. Our Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever. Neither He nor His ways will ever be obsolete to those who love Him.
